Saucier woman killed in Friday wreck near Laurel

JASPER COUNTY -- A Saucier woman was killed in a one-car accident Friday morning in Jasper County near Laurel.

Jasper County Deputy Coroner Jessie Crosby said Rhonda Compton, 52, died about 10 a.m. Friday from injuries suffered in a wreck on Interstate 59 in the north lane near the 112-mile marker.

Sgt. Andy West of Mississippi Highway Patrol's Troop H said Compton was the passenger in the Ford SUV that crashed about 8:30 a.m..

"The vehicle was traveling north when it left the road and collided with a tree," West said. "There was heavy rain at the time of the accident. It remains under investigation."

The crash injured three other occupants of the SUV. They were taken by ambulance to South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel. Their conditions are not known at this time.

Compton, known as Ronnie to her friends and family, was a 1981 graduate of Harrison Central High School. She was employed at Franke & Salloum Law Firm in Gulfport.
