Driver flown to Mobile after dump truck overturns in Harrison County

HARRISON COUNTY -- One person was injured when an 18-wheeled dump truck full of dirt overturned Thursday afternoon on Shiner's Boulevard at Mississippi 67, officials said.

The driver had to be removed using the jaws of life, said Mississippi Highway Patrol Master Sgt. Benjamin Seibert.

Harrison County Fire Marshal Pat Sullivan said American Medical Response paramedics treated the driver in the cab, and Rescue 1 Life Care helicopter landed at the scene and transported the driver to USA Medical Center in Mobile.

The accident happened about 2 p.m. and shut down Shriners Boulevard for a couple of hours. The Harrison County Fire Service, D'Iberville Fire Department and Gulfport Combat Readiness Training Center Airport Crash crews worked for about an hour to get the driver out, then Highway Patrol investigated the accident and Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality assisted in clean-up.
