Driver in critical condition after SUV overturns on I-10 in South Mississippi, police say

A small SUV overturned Friday afternoon on Interstate 10 in Gulfport in a crash that left one person in critical condition, authorities said.

The crash occurred just after 1 p.m. in the westbound lanes near the exit for Lorraine Road. Authorities said the driver is conscious and was flying by helicopter to a hospital in Mobile.

Gulfport Fire Chief Billy Kelley said authorities extracted the driver, who was trapped in the car. He said the driver has serious injuries that did not appear life-threatening.

The car overturned and landed near the wood line, Gulfport Police Lt. Jason DuCre said.

Authorities are investigating what caused the crash. Kelley said no other cars were involved and the car appeared to veer off the road.

DuCre said after 2 p.m. that authorities had recently re-opened two lanes after blocking the interstate.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation said delays could last until 3:15 p.m.
