Pedestrian who died after being hit by car in Jackson County was 28-year-old man

A pedestrian identified as James Robert Cunningham, 28, of Moss Point died early Tuesday after being struck by a car on Mississippi 63 near Old Saracennia Road.

Jackson County Chief Deputy Coroner Jason Moody said the incident happened about 12:30 a.m. while a vehicle was southbound.

Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Chase Elkins said Cunningham was walking in the right lane of Highway 63 and was hit by a southbound 2005 Ford Taurus.

The motorist stopped at the scene.

Moody said Cunningham died at the scene.

“We don’t know what he was doing out at that time of the night or where he was going,” Moody said.

Cunningham is either from the Big Point area of Moss Point or the downtown area, he said.
