Navy awards contract for work on Navy housing in Pascagoula

Naval Facilities Engineering Command this month awarded a $23.5 million contract to K-W Construction of San Marcos, Texas, for work on the restoration and modernization of Lakeside Pre Commissioning Unit Bachelor’s Quarters B and A at the Lakeside Support Facility in Pascagoula.

The Office of the Secretary of Defense had previously announced that the facility, a 514-bed unaccompanied housing operation, would be retained by the Navy. Originally slated to close as a result of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure study that included Naval Air Station Pascagoula, the Lakeside facility will continue its mission of serving the unaccompanied housing needs of Pre-Commissioning Unit personnel awaiting completion of ship construction in Pascagoula.

“This project will enable PCU crews to be housed under one roof, minimizing logistical challenges,” said Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport Housing Director Charles Taylor, who is in charge of caretaking for the facility.

“Centralized housing and unit integrity for each PCU will be realized as they enjoy a state-of-the-art facility complete with the amenities our warfighters so richly deserve.”

The scope of restoration to Bachelor Quarters B and A includes replacement of interior finishes, interior doors and hardware, exterior doors and frames, plumbing fixtures, piping, hot water tanks, domestic water heat exchangers, all distribution piping, backflow preventers and water treatment equipment, heating ventilation and air conditioning including direct digital control, fire detection and alarm system.

The project is expected to be complete by October 2013.
