Neighbors on Lower Bay Road in Hancock County remembered Eugene Garcia sitting in his yard in his wheelchair making sure his and neighborhood children were playing safely.
"He loved my kids," said neighbor DeeDee Bermond. "He would sit in his wheelchair and watch the kids play and watch the cars go by. He was a really great guy."
Garcia, 72, loved to watch boxing on TV and enjoyed joking and pulling a few pranks, said his daughter Jane Garcia Smith.
"He and I were alike in that we were always pulling jokes on people," Smith said. "I think he was the greatest person. I know all people think that about their parents, but he was the best daddy I could ever have."
His youngest daughter, 21-year-old Tiffany, and ex-wife Lillie stayed with him during the storm. Eugene was stubborn about staying in his home during the storm, Eugene Garcia Jr. said.
