Patricia George of southwest Hancock County did different things for a living, but when it came right down to it, her main job in life and her passion was being a mother.
"She really didn't have any hobbies other than mothering," said her son Donald George of Miramar, Fla. "She was a single mother. She was divorced from her first husband and lost her second husband, so she took on the job of raising seven children by herself . . . then she raised her grandchildren."
And a big job it was, too. She had 17 grandchildren.
Patricia, 63, originally of Belzoni, had lived on Harbor Drive just west of Waveland since 1978. Donald said she moved to New Orleans from Belzoni when she was a teenager, but after she had him in 1964, she decided Mississippi would be a better place to raise her kids and moved to Waveland.

When Katrina was approaching she went to stay with her friend Marjorie Matrange in an apartment complex at 2057 Waveland Ave.
"She thought she would be safe at her friend's apartment," Donald said. "After the water subsided, my brother went to check on them and found my mother's body there.
"She would have been 64 on Nov. 15. We had her memorial service in November at Edmond Fahey Funeral Home to memorialize her life.
"She was a good mother."
