Hurricane Katrina

Patrick Conway, 49, Biloxi

Relatives of Patrick Conway remember the 49-year-old Biloxi man as a peacemaker, a talented jeweler and a great baseball player.

His older brother, Edward, said one of his most special memories of his brother was when they were younger and Conway made the winning play in a championship baseball game. Conway threw a ball from centerfield to home plate, striking out his opponent.

"He was a big hero," said Edward Conway of Pennsylvania.

Patrick Conway, the youngest of four, apparently died in Hurricane Katrina when his apartment ceiling collapsed. His longtime girlfriend, who was with him, survived. Edward Conway learned about his brother's death in the news.

Edward Conway said he believes his brother decided to ride out the storm at his apartment partly because he felt safe and partly because he didn't have a vehicle.

His first reaction to hearing the news about his brother: Disbelief.
