Hurricane Katrina

Lando Bishop, 75, Biloxi

Lando Bishop liked to wear a cap, and he liked his old pickup truck that he kept parked in front of his little house on Lilly Lane in East Biloxi.

And once the last of his sisters died, he liked to have his birthdays at his niece's home in St. Martin, because when Mary Jones threw a birthday gathering, family would come.

In April, they filled Jones' yard and her house in St. Martin to celebrate Bishop's turning 75 --- nieces came from Texas and a nephew from Orlando. The family brought food and everyone ate.

"There were people everywhere," Jones said.

Bishop's favorite food was red beans and rice, sweet potatoes and pineapple cake. He was retired from the construction business, never married and had no children. He lived with a nephew.

Jones said it was hard to go back to the neighborhood after the storm, but his old truck was still there, swamped and useless.
