Feb. 11 was a special day for Edgar Bane Sr. He was born on Feb 11. His mother, Rose Shaffer, was born on Feb. 11. Edgar married his wife of more than 25 years, Christina, on Feb. 11. And his daughter, Serena, was born on Feb. 11.

"That was a special day for him," said Shaffer.

But if you really want to know the essence of Edgar, what made him tick, you need look no further than the art of barbecuing. And for Edgar, it truly was an art.

"That was his passion --- barbecuing," said Shaffer. "He loved to experiment with foods, too. He loved to try out new foods and recipes. I tell you, he was good at that."

Edgar Bane Sr., 48, a big bear of a man, died alongside his wife and two sons in their Waveland home during Hurricane Katrina.

And though he loved fishing, particularly with his boys, it wasn't always easy to get away. At least that far away. But the backyard grill, that was another story.

"He'd get the whole family together," said Shaffer.

For Edgar, barbecuing was also a way to spend more time with his two sons.
