POPLARVILLE -- Pearl River Community College students and faculty can check out a bike as part of a new loan program to help them get around and get healthy.

Thanks to a $198,171 grant from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation grant, the PRCC Wellness Center bought 50 Cruiser bikes, 10 fat tire bikes and 10 tricycles to be used by students, faculty and staff. The program was unveiled Tuesday.

"Health and wellness is an important part of what we do here at Pearl River Community College," said William Lewis, president, said in a press release. "We've got the wonderful Wellness Center that allows you to participate in these programs."

The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation in 2012 awarded $286,270 to PRCC to replace outdated equipment at the Wellness Center and construct an outdoor walking track. The grant was the first to be awarded to a community college by the foundation.

The most recent grant also will allow PRCC to offer two summer camps for elementary students, help with the "Get Ready to Run" school program in Poplarville elementaries and buy outdoor exercise equipment and balance ball desk chairs.
