Tougaloo College Alumni Chapter offers $2,000 scholarship

The Gulf Coast Chapter of Tougaloo College Alumni is offering a $2,000 scholarship to a deserving high school senior who will attend Tougaloo College near Jackson next fall. The scholarship will be presented at the chapter's annual scholarship and awards on April 6 at the Good Deeds Community Center in North Gulfport.

Applicants must be graduating seniors in the top 20 percent of their classes, with a minimum overall grade point average of 85 in academic subjects. Each applicant must include two character references and a type-written essay of no less than 75 words addressing the applicant's educational and career goals.

Applications are available at all coast high schools and at many churches. Completed applications reference letters and essays should be mailed to Metric Dockins, P.O. Box 1165, Gulfport and postmarked no later than March 27. Details: 229-4507.

MGCCC's Gulf Coast Youth Leadership students graduate from program

Thirty-one high school seniors graduated from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College's Gulf Coast Youth Leadership program.

The program began in 1998 in an effort to expose high school students to a variety of leadership and career challenges, with students from George, Stone, Jackson and Harrison counties invited to participate. During the year, students are required to complete research reports, act as mentors and participate in community service. They are also expected to participate in monthly field trips to learn more about the economics of South Mississippi. The students earn three hours of college credit upon meeting all program requirements.
