Public arts school plans open house

BROOKHAVEN -- The Mississippi School of the Arts is planning an open house Dec. 5 for prospective students and their families. For Coast families, a session runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is also a session that starts at 8 a.m.

MSA is on the historic Whitworth College campus at 355 West Monticello St., Brookhaven. Activities will include campus tours, performances and introduction of faculty and staff.

MSA is a statewide public residential high school. Students apply in their 10th-grade year for their last two years of high school. They take academic classes required for graduation as well as education in dance, literary arts, media arts, theater, visual arts or vocal music.

"MSA is beneficial to those that want to gain a world view, self-responsibility, discipline and explore the arts in an extraordinary way," said spokeswoman Jennifer Jackson.
