David Baggett has been appointed the new superintendent of Jackson County School District.

The assistant superintendent of Jackson County School District will become the new superintendent on July 1.

David Baggett was chosen from a field of nine applicants who were interviewed for the job, the school district said Friday in a press release.

He replaces John Strycker, whose contract was not renewed after discrimination lawsuits were filed against him during his three years on the job and at his former school district.

Before coming to Jackson County School District, Baggert was assistant superintendent of Starkville Oktibbeha School District and was named Ocean Springs School District Administrator of the Year in 2010.

“Mr. Baggett has a broad range of administrative experience coupled with the ability to build relationships between staff and stakeholders,” said J. Keith Lee, school board president

He said the board is confident in Baggett’s ability to lead the district and uphold the high standards the community expects.

The press release says he has:

• A documented track record of improving student achievement

• Developing a climate of trust and openness

Engaging parents and the community in the life of the school

Baggett received a bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State University and a master’s degree from University of Southern Mississippi. He also is graduate of the Mississippi School Board Association’s Prospective Superintendent Leadership Academy.
