Metallica changed the lives of 30 Mississippi college students. Here’s how.
Since graduating from high school back in 2012, Uniqua Allen has struggled with paying for her college courses and has had to stop school and start again more than once.
Now, with a little help from heavy metal legends Metallica, she will be able to finish her degree this year.
“It literally changed my life,” she said. “The Metallica Scholarship has helped relieve one of the biggest stresses I have had while being in college. Not having to worry about how I am going to pay for my classes has allowed me to focus on school more. I am so grateful and thankful for this scholarship.”
Uniqua and 29 other students have been named Metallica Scholars at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
The college received $100,000 in scholarship funds from the Metallica Scholarship Initiative in July to use for students in career and technical programs.
“Not only will these funds expand opportunities for our students, but our participation in the initiative will allow us to grow our knowledge base and provide tools to make our programs more successful and beneficial to our students,” said Dr. Jordan Sanderson, associate vice president of Teaching and Learning at MGCCC.
The initiative was created in 2019 by the members of Metallica and the band’s management team to enhance workforce education programs in community colleges.
In the 2022-2023 school year, the initiative will reach more than 2,000 people in 32 community colleges across 27 states.
