How much do teachers make on the MS Coast? Search for salaries by school district.
For years, Mississippi educators were among the lowest paid in the country.
But that changed in March when the START act was passed, a $250 million bill that will give teachers an average pay raise of $5,140, effective for the 2022-23 school year.
In light of the raise and through a public records request, the Sun Herald compiled starting salary data for teachers across the Coast.
Teacher salaries are based on a combination of experience and education classification:
- Those with a bachelor’s degree are considered class A.
- Teachers with a master’s degree are considered class AA.
- Teachers that hold a specialist degree level license including a Juris Doctorate or Master of Fine Arts degree are considered class AAA.
- Those with a Ph.D. are considered class AAAA.
When looking at the 14 districts in South Mississippi — including the three Coast counties — the highest 2021-22 starting salaries are for teachers in Pass Christian, where teachers with an A-level degree earn a starting salary of $43,510, and educators with a AAAA-level degree earn $48,658.
On the other side, the lowest paid teachers for the 2021-22 school year are in George County, where the starting salary for teachers with an A-level degree is $37,775.
