Two Coast counties have the most COVID-19 cases in MS schools. Check out the data.
Harrison and Jackson County continue to lead the state in numbers of teachers and students who have tested positive for COVID-19 since the school year started.
According to the numbers released Wednesday, schools in Jackson County last week reported 46 new cases among students and five among staff, with one outbreak.
Schools in Harrison County reported 18 new positive cases among students and three among staff last week, with one outbreak. Last week, county schools saw 38 new cases and nine outbreaks.
Alcorn, DeSoto, Jones and Lee Counties are now also nearing the benchmark of 100 total cases among students and staff.
Since school began, 99 students and 37 staff in Harrison County have tested positive for COVID-19. In Jackson County, 172 students and 49 teachers have tested positive.
The latest numbers show Harrison County has still reported more outbreaks (defined as at least three cases in one group, like a classroom or sports team) than any other county in the state, with 14 total. But Perry County, with 12 outbreaks, has now passed Jackson County, with eight reported.
On Sunday, Vancleave High School teacher Tom Slade died from COVID-19 complications. His sister told the Sun Herald he did not believe he had been exposed to the coronavirus at school.
The state collects information from individual schools but only reports the coronavirus data by county. For Wednesday’s report, 861 schools in 80 counties sent data to the state.
