The excitement and crowds are building as the 29th Cruisin’ The Coast on Tuesday will feature a salute to veterans and heated flame-throwing competition.

This is the 18th year executive director Woody Bailey has overseen Cruisin’ The Coast, along with his dedicated staff and an army of volunteers who put on America’s Best Car Show each year. He became the executive director after Gene Oswalt died in 2008, less than a month before that year’s event.

Each year brings something new to Cruisin’, while the favorite events continue. The flame throwing competition began in 2008 at Silver Slipper Casino in Hancock County and later moved to Island View Casino in Gulfport. It begins at dusk tonight and is always a crowd-pleaser.

Cruisin’ also has a tradition of saluting veterans, and that continues Tuesday at Cruise Central.

Some Cruisers swing by the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport on the way so residents can see the cars. That event is canceled this year due to the federal government shutdown but the official Salute to the Veterans at Cruise Central will go on as scheduled, Bailey said.
