  • Cruisin’ The Coast opens in Gulfport; Cruise Central and downtown draw crowds.
  • Autocross runs at Scarlet Pearl Casino for registered drivers; rain may delay.
  • New Long Beach Show & Shine plus parade highlight Monday; on-site registration resumes.

Drivers and spectators excited for the start of the 29th Cruisin’ The Coast Sunday didn’t let rain in the forecast keep them from the opening event in downtown Gulfport.

The rain held off and streets in the center of downtown were filled with cars and people by 10 a.m. for View the Cruise.

“America’s Largest Block Party” events generally are rain or shine and the weather is forecast to brighten through the rest of the week.

Monday’s highlights are the return of Cruise Central to Jones Park in Gulfport and the late afternoon parade in Long Beach that’s always among the favorite Cruisin’ events. This year, the city welcomes park downtown and enjoy the new Long Beach Show & Shine event all day at the Town Green and along Jeff Davis Avenue.

A little rain won’t stop the Autocross Guys and Scarlet Pearl Casino in D’Iberville from hosting the free Autocross for registered cruisers only on Monday. Drivers can see how their classic cars navigates the course set up in the northern casino parking lot. It’s a go, said Woody Bailey, executive director of Cruisin’ The Coast, although a downpour may temporarily delay the action for safety.

Along with the official events, cruisers will be driving the beach and hunting for the best restaurants, shops and photo ops Monday and all week across the 12 cities of South Mississippi.
