A Vancleave man is not only back in jail for a probation violation but also has his family in hot water for trying to help him escape deputies, authorities said.

Shelby Allen Hines, 24, walked away Aug. 23 from Home of Grace, where he was in a court-ordered drug and alcohol program. His probation was on charges of burglary, malicious mischief and receiving stolen property, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies went to the home of Greg and Jan Webb, acting on a tip, officials said.

Greg Webb repeatedly denied his stepson was there. Jan Webb, however, told deputies her son ran into the woods near the house as deputies arrived, authorities said.

While one deputy was getting the mother’s statement, another found Hines hiding under the house.

Hines was arrested and taken to the Jackson County jail. The Webbs were arrested on charges they lied about Hines’ whereabouts. They are free on bond.
