Authorities are searching for Anthony Lee Smith Sr. in the pickax burglary of a couple’s home in Vancleave, Sheriff Mike Ezell said.

Smith, 36, was identified by a Louisiana traffic ticket left in the pickup truck he abandoned, Ezell said.

The break-in on Wire Road was reported at 1:35 a.m. Friday.

The homeowners said two booming noises woke them up and they realized a shirtless man armed with a pickax had broken in.

The man who lives there told a dispatcher he confronted the burglar in his living room and later pointed a gun through the window of his pickup truck when he found the burglar sitting in his truck, Ezell said.

The burglar jumped out of the homeowner’s truck and ran off, leaving his own truck in the driveway.

Smith was driving a gold 1999 Chevrolet Silverado, Ezell said. He was believed to still be in the area.

Investigators believe Smith broke into a wooden shed behind the home’s back porch and stole a battery charger, Ezell said. They found the charger in the back of Smith’s truck.

Smith reportedly left behind a black zippered pouch on the road near the home he broke into, Ezell said. The pouch contained what appears to be drug paraphernalia.

Anyone who sees Smith is asked to call 911 or 228-769-3065.
