One person is dead and one is in custody after a shooting at a Gulfport gas station Wednesday night.
Gulfport responded to the Citgo gas station, 1103 Pass Road, around 9:45 p.m. Thursday, said Sgt. Damon McDaniel.
They found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. He died at the scene, McDaniel said.
One man is in custody after the shooting. His identity has not been released and the investigation is still in its early stages, McDaniel said.
After 11 p.m. Wednesday, police investigators and Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove were still on scene. Residents had gathered near the brightly lit store across the street from Central Elementary School. Once child played in a rain puddle as adults watched police.
Around 11:30 p.m., a distraught man arrived at the gas station. He was weeping and had to be restrained by police.
Dena Jones, of Gulfport, identified the distraught man as the victim's father. Jones said the victim, a 26-year-old, had been eating dinner at her home in North Gulfport just 25 minutes before they received a call saying he had been shot.
Jones said the man had gone to the store to buy some cigarettes.
A woman who identified herself as the victim's girlfriend was also at the scene, crying and hugging friends as they watched police investigate.
Just before midnight, the victim's body remained in the northwest corner of the gas station parking lot, near his own car. There were at least four yellow evidence markers near the body, which usually indicate bullet casings.
Pass Road was blocked Wednesday night for about a block in either direction of the scene.
