Two pickpockets worked in tandem to distract a store clerk, sneak behind the counter, steal her wallet out of her purse and run up $2,000 of fraudulent charges on her credit cards.

D’Iberville police Capt. Marty Griffin said the wallet was stolen Friday afternoon at Sports Shack on Lamey Bridge Road. The store sells sports apparel and gifts including Southern Miss, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, LSU, Alabama and New Orleans Saints merchandise.

A man and woman entered the store together, then while the man distracted the employee, the woman crawled behind the counter and stole the wallet. The thieves then used the stolen credit cards at various stores in the Promenade Shopping Center, Griffin said.

He said the man distracted the employee by asking her to show him some merchandise at the back of the store.

“Video surveillance captured the female suspect stealing the wallet,” Griffin said, adding surveillance cameras from stores where the cards were used also captured footage of the man and woman.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the D’Iberville Police Department at 396-4252 or Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-877-787- 5898.
