A man who became angry with his ex-girlfriend set fire to a shed and the blaze also damaged an adjacent home, officials said.

Gulfport police and firefighters responded to a report of a fire at Joseph Avenue about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Firefighters found a storage shed on fire and noticed electrical power was running from a house to the shed and several people had been living in the shed, Fire Chief Mike Beyerstedt said. They also learned someone had threatened to start a fire, he said.

“No one was in the shed when we got there, but flames from the shed damaged some of the siding on the house,” Beyerstedt said.

Investigators determined the fire was intentionally set, Beyerstedt said.

Police found Derrick Demetrios Speed, 48, of Gulfport, walking on Old Pass Road and Fournier Avenue late Wednesday night, police Sgt. Damon McDaniel said, and arrested him on an arson charge.

Speed was held at the Harrison County jail.

Justice Court Judge Brandon Ladner set his bond at $30,000.
