A man walked into his parents’ George County home with his 3-year-old son and told them he had shot his ex-girlfriend in Louisiana, officials said.
The George County Sheriff’s Office called the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office and deputies found the body of Aimee Kirst, 33, in her Pearl River, La., home Friday with an apparent gunshot wound to the head, according to a St. Tammany press release.
Jonathan Talley, 35, is in custody in George County. Warrants for first-degree murder and second-degree kidnapping have been issued. He will be extradited to Louisiana to face those charges, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
Talley had a restraining order against him for assaulting Kirst in 2015, authorities said. He was arrested last year for threatening her and had brought a firearm to a friend’s house where Kirst was staying, officials said. The incidents and protective order caused Talley to lose custody of their 3-year-old son.
Investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the slaying. They believe the child was present when Kirst was shot.
“This is truly a tragedy,” St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith said. “This young lady unnecessarily lost her life. What is even more tragic is that her 3-year-old son will now have to grow up without his mother and his father.”
