Chief: Man wounded after shooting at Picayune police

PICAYUNE -- A man was hospitalized after allegedly firing at a Picayune police offer Tuesday night.

Police Chief Bryan Dawsey said the incident took place just before 9:15 p.m. when an officer on patrol noticed a vehicle circle his patrol vehicle several times while at a convenience store at the intersection of Beech Street and Jackson Landing Road.

Officers then observed the driver exit the vehicle before he fled on foot, Dawsey said.

Then the suspect shot at the officers. One officer returned fire, Dawsey said. He shot at the suspect four times, striking the man in the upper part of his body, the chief said.

A gun was found near the man after the shooting, and Dawsey said it appeared the suspect was trying to toss the gun after he was wounded by police.

Neither officer involved in the shooting were injured. The suspect was taken to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg for treatment of his wounds, Dawsey said.

The identity of the suspect has yet to be released.

Investigators with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations will conduct an investigation, which is standard procedure when dealing with an officer-involved shooting.
