OCEAN SPRINGS -- Two Ocean Springs High School male students have been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a female student.

Deputies became involved after the student reported to a teacher she had been assaulted May 4 in a school bathroom, Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell said in a press release.

Both of the accused students were expelled for the rest of the school year, Ezell said.

Ocean Springs School District Superintendent Bonita Coleman-Potter confirmed the news Tuesday afternoon.

"It has been alleged that a sexual assault took place," she said. "It is being investigated by the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. Right now I've been instructed not to say anything more so as not to compromise the investigation."

The accused students are both under 18. One was arrested May 11, and his case is being handled through Jackson County Youth Court. The other student has not yet been arrested and will have his case heard by a grand jury, Ezell said.
