Update: Biloxi woman identifies son as victim in officer-involved shooting

Miami Herald, file

JACKSON COUNTY -- One person is dead in an officer-involved shooting that happened overnight.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell confirmed the report Monday morning.

Sherry Bowman, a Biloxi resident, confirmed the victim as her son, Christian Bowman, 23, also of Biloxi.

Ezell said the shooting occurred at the Ramada Inn in St. Martin,  at Exit 50 north of the Interstate 10.

According to a Sheriff's Department press release, deputies responded to a call from the clerk on duty to check possible drug activity in one of the guest rooms.

At the hotel, a guest at the room in question became "aggressively combative toward the officer."

As the deputy and the suspect fought, another deputy arrived and tried to help the first deputy subdue the suspect, according to the press release.

The fight escalated until one of the deputies shot the suspect, who died at the scene.

The names of the deputies involved will not be released at this time, Ezell said. Both deputies have been placed on administrative leave until further notice.

Sherry Bowman was distraught over the news and could not understand the circumstances that led to her son's death.

"I don't understand why they had to shoot him," she said. "They had Tasers for God's sake."

She said her son apparently died from a single gunshot wound to the chest, and Christian Bowman's body was sent to Jackson for an autopsy.

MBI is leading the investigation along with the District Attorney's Office. Their findings will be presented to a grand jury, Ezell said.
