JACKSON COUNTY -- Deputies have arrested a Lucedale man after indictment on two counts of second-degree murder involving the deaths of two people in a New Year's Eve traffic crash in 2014.
Sheriff Mike Ezell said Asa Robert Vice, 35, was arrested Monday night.
Brian M. Walls, 40, of Escatawpa and Edward Dean Parnell, 47, of Vancleave died at the scene of the crash on Old River Road in Vancleave.
Vice and another passenger, Kelley A. Burroughs, 27, were taken to a hospital and were listed in critical condition.
Speed was a factor, Ezell said.
Deputies had been patrolling Old River Road when a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am sped past a patrol car, Ezell said.
A deputy turned around and tried to stop the car but lost sight of it. The deputy had hoped he could close the distance, Ezell said, but he turned a curve and saw the car had run off the road and crashed into a tree line. The 1:15 a.m. crash was about a mile north of the Wade-Vancleave Road intersection.
Deputies tried to give emergency help until Acadian Ambulance Service personnel arrived, Ezell said. A medical helicopter was on standby.
"We've been working on it for over a year and we had a lot of work to do on it," Ezell said. "We finally got the case all together and got it to a grand jury."
Ezell said traffic investigators presented the case to a Jackson County grand jury in March.
