BILOXI -- A man suspected of shoplifting from a department store at Edgewater Mall led police on a brief pursuit before he crashed on U.S. 90 at Cowan Road, Sgt. O'Neil Adams said.

Police arrested Troy Bernard Barney, 49, of Gulfport, on Monday after he and his passenger received medical treatment.

Barney faces charges of felony eluding, shoplifting and driving without a valid license or insurance.

Police had been called to Belk department store about 1:04 p.m. on a report of a shoplifting in progress, Adams said.

Patrol officers tried to stop the man as he drove off in a silver Saturn, Adams said, but he sped west on C.T. Switzer Drive, south on DeBuys Road and turned west onto Beach Drive.

He tried to turn north on Cowan Road and lost control of the car, striking a vehicle at the intersection, Adams said.

Barney and his passenger were taken to area hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.

No other injuries were reported.

Barney's passenger was not involved in the shoplifting, Adams said.

Justice Court Judge Albert Fountain set a $100,000 bond on Barney's eluding charge. Barney's misdemeanor bonds total $2,929.
