HANCOCK COUNTY -- An autopsy has been performed on a Kiln toddler who died after he was taken to a hospital for breathing problems and was found to be hemorrhaging.

Maddox Vieregge, 15 months old, died just after midnight Saturday. His death is under investigation as a homicide.

Sheriff Ricky Adam said investigators were waiting to receive a report from an autopsy performed Monday at the Mississippi Forensics Laboratory in Jackson.

"That will give us an idea of where our investigation needs to go," Adam said.

Coroner Jim Faulk said the autopsy was completed Monday morning but the report itself had not been compiled later Monday. He said the child's remains were being taken to a funeral home.

Officials said it's likely the report will be ready Tuesday.

It appears the child suffered traumatic head injuries Thursday, sheriff's Cmdr. Glenn Grannan said.

First-responders were called to a home on Kiln Acres Drive, north of Kiln-Picayune Road, on Thursday and found Maddox suffering from cerebral bleeding and hemorrhaging, he said.

"He had difficulty breathing because he had blood in his lungs," Grannan said.

The child was at his grandparents' home, where he lived with them and his mother.

Kiln Acres Road is north of Kiln-Picayune Road.

The toddler was taken to Hancock Medical Center in Bay St. Louis and was later flown Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans, where he died early Sunday.

Grannan did not say how the child could have been was injured, but said officials have collected witness statements.
