BILOXI -- A Biloxi man was shot in the leg late Monday night and later died. He was found outside a nearby neighborhood store when someone called 911, officials said.

Leonardo Deandre White, 22, apparently was shot in an artery, Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said. An autopsy is pending.

White, known as "Nardo" to friends and family, was found in the parking lot of The Corner Station on Division and Lameuse streets. Someone called 911 at 10:31 p.m.

Sgt. O'Neil Adams said police found possible evidence of the crime scene in the 200 block of Delauney Street, which is a block west of Lameuse.

The alleged crime scene and the parking lot are both a short distance from his family's home.

White was taken to Merit Health Biloxi, where he died at 11:38 p.m.

Police arrested Jesse Marquerius King, 27, of Biloxi, on a murder charge Tuesday morning. Police said King turned himself in.

Justice Court Judge Albert Fountain ordered King held with no bond because he has a pending felony, Adams said. Biloxi police had arrested King on a charge of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance Sept. 25, the county jail docket shows.

No details have been released on a possible motive.

After it happened

Store owner Doan Xinh said he had closed up for the night and was inside his business when he looked out and noticed a commotion. He said he saw police and realized someone was on the ground. Xinh said he hadn't heard anything to raise suspicions -- no gunshots or loud noises.

Neighbors on nearby Haise Street said White lived with his mother and four brothers.

Cecelia McDonald drove up to the store Tuesday morning.

"I knew this child," McDonald said, referring to White. "He's just a young boy. He was a good boy. Quiet. A humble child."

Friends mourn loss

Friends and neighbors gathered near his home to mourn his loss and to talk about the young man they all called their friend. They said he had just started a new job and Monday was his mother's birthday.

"I'm devastated," said Belinda Bailus Olsen, who described him as one of her best friends. He lived next door to her home.

"On New Year's Eve, we gathered on his mother's front porch and held hands and prayed," Olsen said.

Olsen created a video tribute to White on her Facebook page early Tuesday.

"Almost instantly, it had 200 likes," she said. "It had more than 1,200 hits by noon.

"He won't ever be forgotten."

Diana Maricich said she and White had been friends 10 years through his sister, a former classmate.

"I came over here to give my condolences to his family, but they're not here," Maricich said.

Mary Strickland was among several who spoke to the Sun Herald and had nothing but positive things to saw about White. She said she often saw him walking up and down the street.

"He was very respectful to me," Strickland said. "He has never been in any trouble as far as I know," Strickland said.
