Fatal Gulfport shooting happened outside home of suspect's mother
HARRISON COUNTY -- The suspect in a fatal weekend shooting fired shots outside his mother's home, killing a man and wounding the victim's younger cousin, Sheriff Troy Peterson said.
Shaquil Oneal Sands, 21, remained in custody Monday. He faces charges of murder and aggravated assault from a shooting reported at 9:09 p.m. Saturday.
Richard Doby, 23, of Gulfport, died of a gunshot wound after a shooting outside the home of Sands' family in the 13800 block of Robindale Road in Crown Hill subdivision.
Doby's cousin, also 23, had multiple gunshot wounds. He remained in critical but stable condition Monday, Peterson said.
"I think he is going to survive," Peterson said.
No motive for the shooting has been released, but Peterson said the accused and the victims were acquaintances.
The neighborhood is north of Three Rivers Road as it turns east toward Biloxi. Robindale Road is between Crown Road and Acadian Avenue. The sheriff said the shooting could have been worse because the homes are built close to each other.
"Shots could have hit anyone, anything or another house," Peterson said.
Investigators believe Sands and his brother, who was not arrested, were both present when the cousins arrived and an argument turned into a fight, he said.
"The physical altercation turned deadly when one of them grabbed a gun," Peterson said.
"The vehicle of one of the victims was parked there when deputies arrived. The suspect had left but his mother called him and we were able to take him into custody."
Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said Doby died of a gunshot wound to the chest.
American Medical Response took the wounded man to Memorial Hospital at Gulfport.
Sands was held at the Harrison County jail.
Justice Court Judge Melvin Ray set bonds that total $1.5 million.
