GULFPORT -- Police have asked for help to find out who shot a woman in the head. She was hospitalized in critical condition.
Police received a call about 7 p.m. Thursday requesting help for a woman in the 1200 block of Fournier Avenue who appeared to have been assaulted, police Sgt. Damon McDaniel said. The neighborhood is south of Old Pass Road.
Police arrived to find her suffering from a head wound, he said. American Medical Response took her to a hospital.
About an hour later, hospital personnel notified police the woman had suffered a gunshot wound to the head, he said.

"Due to the severity of her injuries, we don't know if she lives there where she was when it happened or how she got there," McDaniel said. "We have not been able to get a lot of information from her."
"We're trying to solve this crime to give this victim some kind of relief. I know her family has got a lot of questions and we're trying to give them answers."
McDaniel said he urges anyone who was in the area Thursday night or who has any information about the shooting to call the Gulfport Police Department at 868-5959.

"We can solve this crime if people will help," McDaniel said.
The shooting is under investigation as an aggravated assault.
McDaniel said it's unclear if there is more than one assailant.
