A drug deal ended with gunfire hitting a vehicle and one person pistol-whipped, sheriff's officials said.

At 2:20 p.m. Sunday, Jackson County deputies responded to a call of shots fired at a residence on Old Fort Bayou Road, Sheriff Mike Ezell said in a release.

Deputies detained two people, found a Smith and Wesson .40 caliber handgun and recovered several .40-caliber shell casings.

Ezell said one person went to the department's West Substation in Ocean Springs with a head laceration from being it with a handgun. The victim reported his or her vehicle had been shot, and the incident was sparked by the purchase of illegal drugs, officials said.

Deputies arrested Denzel Sean Silverman, 20, who lived at the residence, on an aggravated assault charge.

Silverman was out on bond for an arrest on possession of a controlled substance while in possession of a handgun.

He is held at the Jackson County jail pending initial appearance in court.

If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
