JACKSON COUNTY -- A Vancleave woman arrested on a felony domestic-violence charge is accused of barricading her husband in a bedroom and setting it on fire, though the man was able to force his way out of the room to safety, Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell.

Deputies found Pamela Ruth Salter, 55, hiding in the woods behind the couple's home in the 12000 block of Ridgeland Road in Vancleave and took her into custody. She could face additional charges as the investigation proceeds. She is being held at the Jackson County jail.

Sheriff's Capt. Chris Stratton said neighbors called to report seeing smoke coming from the home about 4 p.m.

When deputies got there, they found Michael Salter, 49, outside talking to neighbors. He told deputies he and his wife "had gotten into an argument" and she set fire to the room and blocked its door with a heavy object.

"It looks like she set some clothes on fire," Stratton said. An accelerant does not appear to have been used, he said.

Michael Salter "knocked the door down to get out," he said.

Stratton said there were a lot of burned clothes but no major structural fire damage to the room.

The investigation is continuing.

No serious injuries were reported.
