Gautier police found themselves in a gunfight Thursday morning after responding to a domestic violence call at a home near Magnolia Bluff, officials said.

Officer Matt Hoggatt said Seth Edward Bemis, 32, immediately started shooting at officers as they approached the home.

"The suspect didn't say anything," Hoggatt said. "He came right out and started firing with a handgun."

Officers returned fire and were able to arrest him after he was shot in the leg, Hoggatt said.

"He was taken to Singing River Hospital about 5 a.m. for the wound," Hoggatt said. "It isn't expected to be life-threatening."

Hoggatt said Bemis will face two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer when he is released.

Police also are investigating the domestic violence tip that brought them to the house.

"There was no one else at the residence when we arrived," Hoggatt said.

No officers were wounded during the incident, Hoggatt said. It is unknown if any vehicles or surrounding buildings took damage.
