Jackson County deputies searching for armed robbery suspect

JACKSON COUNTY - Sheriff's deputies are searching for a suspect in an armed robbery of a laundromat in the St. Martin community this morning, Sheriff Mike Byrd said.

The sheriff said the suspect tied up the clerk and was robbing the store when the telephone rang and the clerk managed to knock the phone off the receiver, alerting the caller to the need for help. The person on the other end of the phone contacted authorities.

A witness, Byrd said, had followed the suspect's vehicle from the business, and sheriff's deputies later found it abandoned near Langley Point. From there, he said, the suspect ran through a wooded area and stole a truck, fleeing the scene.

Sheriff's deputies have identified the suspect, Byrd said, and are currently searching for him but are not releasing the suspect's name.
