Witness sent to jail after refusing to testify (Updated 4:25 p.m.)

Circuit Judge Robert Krebs has found a witness in the capital murder trial of Spencer O'Brian Lawrence in contempt of court for refusing to testify.

Emmanuel D. Williams was taken into custody late this afternoon and taken directly to the Jackson County jail. Williams had provided a statement to authorities prior to the trial and had been summoned to testify.

District Attorney Tony Lawrence said Williams told him today he was not going to testify this afternoon and would have to be forcibly taken into the courtroom.

Williams is now in custody in the Jackson County jail on a contempt of court charge until such time, Krebs said, as he is compelled to return to the court to testify.

Lawrence is on trial for capital murder in the October 2009 robbery and shooting death of Jermaine Jebon "J.J." Kelly at a Moss Point home. Two others are facing capital murder charges and awaiting trial at a later date.
