Suspects sought in George County sheriff's death captured

The search ended this morning for two suspects wanted in connection with the death of George County Sheriff Garry Welford.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd said Brandi Williams, 19, and Christopher Baxter, 24, were taken into custody near the area where they'd abandoned their truck Wednesday after allegedly running over Welford.

Williams was believed to be driving the maroon truck when it slammed into Welford as he was placing spike strips in the road to stop the vehicle around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. The incident happened on a road near the George and Greene county lines. Welford died about an hour later at an Alabama hospital.

Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol officers made the arrests. Both suspects, Byrd said, have been taken to the Hattiesburg jail, where they are being charged with one count each of capital murder.

MHP, George, Jackson, Harrison and Greene County officials, as well as Lucedale police were involved in the overnight search for the suspects.
