Gulfport drive-by shooting suspect hid in garbage can. It didn’t work

Gulfport police have charged Deshawn Marques Reed, 21, of Gulfport with one count of drive-by shooting.

Officers encountered Reed after responding Wednesday night to a shooting in the 14000 block of Cypress Court, a department news release says.

They found a victim with gunshot wound. He also was in possession of marijuana. At a local hospital, the victim was listed in stable condition. As they secured the scene, officers encountered Reed, who tried to run away. He didn’t get far.

The officers found him hiding in a garbage can, also in possession of marijuana. They recovered an AR-style rifle while searching the scene.

Officers interviewed Reed at the police department, where they also served him with an outstanding felony warrant from a drive-by shooting on May 16. Reed is being held at the Harrison County jail on a $250,000 bond and a Mississippi Department of Corrections hold.

Gulfport police are asking anyone with information about the drive-by shootings to call them at 228-868-5959 or Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers at 877-787-5898. Anonymous tips can be submitted online at mscrimestoppers.org.
