A Venezuelan man tied to the Tren de Aragua international gang was sentenced Thursday to 10 months in prison for conspiracy to commit bank fraud.

U.S. District Judge Michael P. Mills in Oxford also gave Darrin Daza-Segura, 26, three years on supervised release and ordered him to pay $47,250 in restitution. Daza-Segura is an undocumented immigrant who has been living in Dallas, Texas.

He will be surrendered to ICE to be deported when he is released from prison, says a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Oxford.

The news release says Daza-Segura and co-defendant Winder Alexande Canelon-Tiapa reprogrammed ATMs as they traveled Mississippi “to disperse large amounts of cash,” stealing a total of $47,000. They also tried to steal much more through what is known as “ATM jackpotting,” the news release says.

“ATM jackpotting is a significant problem throughout the country and is a known crime commonly perpetrated by members of the Tren de Araqua gang from Venezuela,” the news release says.

Winder Alexander Canelon-Tiapa has also pleaded guilty and is scheduled for sentencing May 28 before Mills.

“These Venezuelan gang members have been categorized as terrorists,” said U.S. Attorney Scott Leary “In Mississippi, you can trace where they go from Interstate 55 and Highway 45. They do not live here, but have come to victimize our citizens in North Mississippi.

“We are not going to stand for such actions in this district.”

The Cyber Crime Division of the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office investigated the case, while. Assistant U.S. Attorney Clayton A. Dabbs serves as prosecutor.
