A 19-hour standoff between law enforcement and a man barricaded inside a Biloxi apartment complex ended in his arrest Friday morning, authorities said.

Officers were called Thursday afternoon to the Oasis Apartments, at Rodenberg Avenue and Pass Road, after a 911 caller reported a man with a gun was acting erratic, police said.

The man barricaded himself inside an apartment when officers arrived, according to Lt. Candace Young, a spokesperson for the Biloxi Police Department.

Law enforcement entered the apartment around 10 a.m. Friday after the man stopped talking to negotiators, Young said. Police did not immediately release the man’s name but said he is in his 30s.

Authorities said the man’s significant other, who is pregnant, was inside the apartment with him. The suspect and woman were both unharmed. Police said the woman will be brought to a hospital out of caution.

The length of the standoff was “unusual, but not unheard of,” Young said. Police said the man engaged with negotiators for most of the standoff and did not threaten the woman. Law enforcement entered the apartment and arrested the man once the woman was in another room, Young said.

The standoff prompted the evacuation of some neighbors and closed nearly all of Rodenberg Avenue north of Pass Road. It is unclear how many neighbors were affected.

SWAT teams with the Harrison and Jackson County sheriff’s departments took over for Biloxi police at midnight, Young said. Biloxi police resumed control after a shift change at 8 a.m.

Police also said a third person who was inside the apartment on Thursday escaped at some point during the standoff and cooperated with police.
