A former George County corrections officer is facing up to five years in prison, a fine of up to $5,000, or both after pleading guilty to unlawful sexual activity with an inmate.
Robert Christopher Miller, 41, pleaded guilty to the offense in October and is set for sentencing in February in George County Circuit Court before Judge Kathy King Jackson.
According to the charging document, a woman jailed in George County performed oral sex on Miller at the jail on July 21, 2021.
A George County jury indicted him on the sex offense in June 2023.
A charge of unlawful sexual activity is often brought against a jail guard accused of having sex with a prisoner — with or without their consent.
In his plea agreement in July, Miller admitted his crime, but said the sex was consensual.
In exchange for his plea, prosecutors are recommending a sentence of five years, with two years suspended and three years to serve in prison plus a fine and court costs. In addition, Miller will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
In addition to working in corrections, Miller said he had also worked as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator. He is married with two children, the records say.
Miller is currently out of jail pending sentencing.
Miller is among other South Mississippi corrections officers sentenced to prison for sex crimes involving inmates, most notably former George County jail guard, Warren Avery.
An investigation in that case began after a woman locked up for failure to pay $1,450 for misdemeanor traffic fines, reported that Avery had raped her in a supervisor’s unoccupied office in the jail on Sept. 7, 2016.
Though the woman referred to what happened to her in that case as rape, Avery faced the same type of charges as Miller.
Avery later pleaded guilty to one count of attempted unlawful sexual activity and two counts of unlawful sexual activity. A judge sentenced him to serve two years in prison day-for-day for the crime, fined him $3,000 and ordered him to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
Similar prison sentences followed when two former Jackson County jailers, Jonathan Jenkins and Bradley Scott Davis, pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual activity in unrelated incidents with female prisoners.
