An independent investigation is underway after a Jackson County regional swat team in Lucedale shot and killed a man believed to be armed with a weapon after he barricaded himself in a home, according to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.
The shooting happened around 7:00 p.m. at a home on Blackberry Lane after the man, since identified as Nicholas Adams Parker, 42, went to approach a door, a release said.
The standoff started after George County authorities went to the home to serve a warrant. Once there, Parker shot at officers, George County Sheriff Mitchell Mixon said.
The investigation is continuing.
Once the investigation is completed, MBI will turn over its findings to the Attorney General’s Office to determine if the case should be presented to a grand jury to determine if criminal wrongdoing occurred.
“We are thankful to report that no deputies or SWAT team members were injured during this incident,” Mixon said.
“I want to personally thank all of the agencies who responded and worked together seamlessly during this dangerous and rapidly evolving situation,” the sheriff said. “Your professionalism and dedication to protecting our community do not go unnoticed.”
