  • She admitted she recruited girls via social media to work in sex trade for her co-defendant.

A Mississippi Coast woman said she got involved in human trafficking after her own alleged trafficker recruited her years ago to perform sex acts for money.

Jasmine Lynn-Marie Drake, 31, of Long Beach, said Malik “KP” Causey, also of Pass Christian, was the man who recruited her to sell herself for sex on his behalf.

As the relationship between her and her trafficker progressed, she said her job was recruiting other girls to come to work for Causey in the commercial sex trade for money.

On Monday, Drake pleaded guilty to a state charge of human trafficking for her role in recruiting and trafficking a 14-year-old girl from South Mississippi to sell herself for sex.

Drake said she reached out to possible recruits over social media. In this case, she said she reached out to the victim on Facebook to ask if she’d like to make some money.

After the girl said she did, Drake said she picked up the girl, then brought her to a motel, where Causey was. From there, the minor started working in the sex trade.

Drake said her job responsibilities also included ensuring the girls had proper clothing, makeup and food. At her plea hearing, she said she didn’t know the victim in the case was 14 until after she recruited her.

Drake is set to testify in the human trafficking trial against Causey when he goes to trial later this year. He is indicted as a habitual offender, subject to a sentence of life in prison for his crimes.

In exchange for Drake’s plea, Harrison County Assistant District Attorney Meaghan Smith said prosecutors are recommending a 20-year prison sentence, with 10 years suspended and 10 years to serve day-for-day for those crimes, plus fines and court costs. She would also have to register as a sex offender.

However, the prosecutor said the plea recommendation is contingent on Drake testifying truthfully at Causey’s trial.

Investigator says girl was drugged

The Harrison County Sheriff’s Department investigated the case.

In the aftermath of the arrests of Drake and Causey in 2023, Harrison County Investigator Tyler Hailey testified about evidence in the case.

During a preliminary hearing, Hailey said the investigation began after deputies responded to a home in Long Beach, where Drake lived, in reference to a possible runaway. Drake lived at the home with her mother, and she kept the girl there when she wasn’t working.

When deputies found the girl, she told them she had been forced into the sex trade and identified Drake and Causey as the suspected recruiters she worked for.

At the time, Hailey said the girl was in bad shape because her alleged captors had repeatedly forcefully injected her with an intravenous drug. As a result, the investigator said the girl had to go through detox for about 11 days after authorities found her.

Details of the investigation

As the investigation continued, the investigator said deputies learned the girl had been forced to perform her first sex act for money the same day she was picked up. That occurred at Quality Inn & Suites in Gulfport, where the girl said a man raped her.

Over the course of her time with Drake and Causey, the investigator said the girl had been forced to endure sex with other men at other hotels in South Mississippi, including the DoubleTree by Hilton and the IP Casino Resort, both in Biloxi, and at a Super 8 motel in Gulfport.

The girl had tried to escape her captors, Hailey said, but she didn’t get away, and was allegedly beaten as a result.

In addition to the girl’s statement to authorities, Harrison County investigators performed a forensic review of a phone the minor had used and extracted over 2,000 files to back up the allegations against the offenders. In addition, investigators recovered text and other messages on social media that the suspects had deleted after the girl was found.

Investigators recovered a ledger as well, in which Drake allegedly kept track of which girls were working and when.
