  • Suspect initially asked to use restroom, returned and fled with stolen cash.
  • Police say suspect appeared unarmed; investigation remains ongoing.

A man from Alabama was arrested this week after authorities said he stole cash from a Hancock Whitney Bank in D’Iberville.

The man walked into the bank around 3 p.m. Wednesday and asked to use a bathroom, D’Iberville Police Chief Marty Griffin said. The bank does not have a public restroom, so he left. Griffin said the man soon returned, showed the teller a note and left with cash.

Police on Thursday arrested Lane Wesley Blatchford, 30, of Prattville, Alabama. He is facing a robbery charge and is jailed in Harrison County on a $250,000 bond.

Detectives began to suspect Blatchford several hours after the robbery and later obtained an arrest warrant. U.S. Marshals Service agents took him into custody in the 10000 block of Central Avenue in D’Iberville, police said in a news release.

It was not immediately clear how much money was stolen, and Griffin said investigators were still taking statements from bank tellers Wednesday afternoon.

Police believe the man was unarmed.
