MS Coast man facing murder charges in double-shooting. Now his mother has been arrested
A Jackson County judge Friday denied bond for a man accused in a shooting at a St. Martin home that resulted in life-threatening injuries to the man’s girlfriend and the death of her son in a domestic violence-related attack.
County Court Judge Mark Watts denied bond for Karis Hamilton, 24, who is charged with murder and domestic violence aggravated assault.
“Your release might pose a danger to the public,” Watts told Hamilton, who was in a red jail jumpsuit during the hearing.
Hamilton’s mother, Monica Lynn Hall, 41, has been arrested on a charge of hindering prosecution in the case. The judge set her bond at $50,000.
Hamilton is accused in a double shooting on Wednesday that killed Devin O’Neal McDaniel, 20, and left his mother, Rosland McDaniel, with life-threatening injuries. The mother remains hospitalized in New Orleans with life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department investigated the case.
Authorities said the shooting happened after a “domestic fight” at a home on Santa Fe Avenue on Wednesday night. Devin McDaniel died at the scene.
Hamilton was arrested in the neighborhood near the crime scene by 5 a.m. Thursday. According to criminal affidavits filed in the case, Hall rendered criminal assistance to her son by attempting to “prevent law enforcement from discovering facts related” to the search for Hamilton and four children at the home at the time of the shooting.
Before the court appearance Friday, Hamilton’s aunt, Stephanie Mayes, spoke briefly about her nephew’s arrest.
“My nephew is not that type of person,” Mayes said. “I really can’t explain the situation. I wasn’t there, but my nephew is not like that. He doesn’t bother anybody unless somebody bothers him.”
The victim’s family did not attend the hearing.
Before his arrest this week, Karis Hamilton had previously been arrested and convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence in Denton County, Texas.
