Commander of MS Coast veterans post charged with embezzling thousands, records show

A South Mississippi woman is set for trial in March on a felony charge of embezzlement for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5699 during her tenure as post commander there, court filings show.

Lela Brieanne Bremen, 43, of Ocean Springs, is out of jail on a $5,000 bond. According to court records, Bremen stole between $5,000 and $25,000 from the VFW post on VFW Road in Ocean Springs. Because of her position there, she was able to access the funds.

The records say the alleged crime occurred over a six-month period ending on July 23, 2023.

If convicted, Bremen could serve up to 10 years in prison, pay a fine of up to $25,000, or both.

The VFW Post 5699 is open to veterans of foreign wars, their spouses and their relatives. The goal of the group is to help veterans and their families.

The Sun Herald reached out to the VFW post for comment but has not yet heard back.
