A man died Saturday night in Bay St. Louis after he showed up armed at an ex-girlfriend’s home and was shot by a family member, police said.

Police were called at 9:30 p.m. to the 900 block of Bookter Street and found the man with a gunshot wound, Interim Chief Alvin Kingston said.

The man arrived at the home, where the woman lived, in violation of a domestic violence protection order, police said. The man became aggressive and held a gun in a “threatening manner,” Kingston said.

Kingston said an armed family member at the scene shot the man “in fear for their life and others.” No one else was injured.

Police made no arrests by Sunday.

“All parties involved in this shooting incident knew each other and are accounted for,” Kingston said. “We are not searching for any suspects.”

Kingston said Sunday afternoon police would not publicly identify the man who died until authorities notify his family. Police also will not release the name of the family member they say shot the man because of an ongoing investigation, Kingston said.

The Bay St. Louis Police Department is asking anyone with information on the incident to contact the Criminal Investigations Division at (228) 467-9222 or the Hancock County Dispatch Center at (228) 255-9191. Police said anyone with information can contact Crimestoppers at www.mscoastcrimestoppers.com, by telephone at 1-877-787-5898 or by using the Crimestoppers “P3 TIPS” app on a mobile device.
